WIRA winners named

THE Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA held the 13th annual Women in Resources Awards (WIRA) on Friday night in Perth.

The Women in Resources Champion Award went to BHP vice president, warehousing inventory and logistics Marie Bourgoin.

Bourgoin was the first female general manager at BHP's Newman operations and helped to increase female leadership representation from 14% to 19% in just two years and achieved gender balance in the leadership team for the first time.

She also sponsored flexible workspaces and creches in both Perth and Newman. 

The other finalists in the category were Fortescue Metals Group's Alison Terry and
BHP's Steve Campbell.

Tianqi Lithium superintendent, process Kathy Lewi was named the Outstanding Woman in Resources.

Lewi is highly regarded for her mentoring activities and speaks regularly at women's conferences.

The other finalists were Chevron Australia's Deanne Renting and Woodside Energy's Sharon Reynolds.

The Outstanding Young Woman in Resources was Newmont Australia corporate counsel Elle Farris, who beat out South32's Nynne Rasmussen and Shell Australia's Ting Gorman.

A lawyer since 2016, Farris assisted with the divestment of Newmont's 50% stake in Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines and negotiated and drafted Newmont's first autonomous haulage agreement.

The Outstanding Operator/Technician/Trade Award went to Shell lead terminal technician Madeline Deppeler.

She was up against Rio Tinto's Samantha Ewe-Jones and Shell's Sharon Pearce.

BHP mining systems west engineer Kim Tan won the Women in Resources Technological Innovation Award.

The other nominees were Bis' Virginie Hannah and RIG Technologies International's Sravani Mukkisa, the later of which won the People's Choice Award.

Compass Group's Respectful Behaviours Campaign won the Outstanding Company Initiative Award.

"While our winners all have different stories and backgrounds, the one attribute they share in common is that they are all leaders in one shape or another," CME CEO Paul Everingham said.

"As our sector strives to increase diversity and continue the journey towards equality, our 2022 WIRA winners show that the future of the WA mining and resources sector is in very good hands.

"In recognising and celebrating not only our winners but all our finalists, I hope that we can highlight the wide range of jobs, career pathways and opportunities that are available to women in our sector."
