Risk Insights 2024

A comprehensive evaluation of mining investment risk across 117 jurisdictions globally

Aspermont

Mining IQ's World Risk Insights 2024 featuring MineHutte Ratings, powered by Mining Journal, provides a comprehensive evaluation of mining investment risk across 117 jurisdictions globally.

The report provides mining companies and investors with essential insights into the current risk landscape, enabling them to make informed decisions and devise the best mitigation strategies – a critical step for any successful investment.

Our two-pronged approach combines 13 ‘Hard Risk' data-driven metrics with corresponding ‘Perceived Risk' scores based on our World Risk Survey, completed by 439 industry professionals and experts.

The Hard Risk metrics include the unique Regulatory Risk and Corruption Exposure Risk ratings from risk partner, MineHutte.

This year, our risk assessment process was broadened to incorporate a new Environmental risk category, evaluating risks related to EIA approvals, water stress and access to low-carbon electricity. Risks are measured in six categories: Legal, Governance, Social, Environmental, Fiscal and Infrastructure.

Methodology:

Mining IQ's World Risk Insights passesses risk using 13 ‘Hard Risk' metrics from established, risk-related indices and corresponding ‘Perceived Risk' scores taken from the World Risk Survey, which asks mining professionals to rate jurisdictions they are familiar with.

The Hard and Perceived metrics assess risk over six weighted categories: Legal (35%), Governance (15%), Social (15%), Environmental (15%), Fiscal (12.5%), and Infrastructure (7.5%). Within each category, Hard Risk ratings make up 80% of the total score and Perceived Risk 20%.

Legal Hard Risk scores are based on Regulatory Risk Ratings from our partner, legal consultancy MineHutte.

All categories feed into the Investment Risk Index (IRI), which scores jurisdictions out of 100 on overall risk, with a higher score meaning lower risk. IRI scores correspond to risk ratings from AAA – for those with negligible risk – to D for jurisdictions with exceptionally high risk.

  1. What are the world's lowest and highest-risk mining jurisdictions?
  2. Is mining investment risk on the rise globally?
