"Early indications are that the incident, which took place at 2:25am on night shift, occurred when a three metre high embankment upon which the employee was standing collapsed and they suffered fatal injuries as a consequence," Troy has reported.

Mining operations have now been temporarily suspended.

An investigation by Troy and Guyana authorities is to be undertaken.

Troy has been a gold producer in Guyana since November 2015.
