A BHP spokesperson said the fire was brought under control yesterday afternoon and the quick response of the on-site emergency services team helped to mitigate damage.

All site personnel are safe.

“One person was treated for smoke inhalation as a precautionary measure,” the spokesperson said.

“Mining at Mt Whaleback resumed at full capacity this morning and processing has resumed in areas unaffected by the incident.

“The affected area of the processing plant is currently being assessed for damage and recovery planning. The cause of the fire will be established through an investigation.”

The Department of Mines and Petroleum was notified.

DMP director of mines safety Andrew Chaplyn said the fire broke out in a screen house.

“The department will seek further information about the cause of the fire and determine what actions are required next,” he said.
