The rock fall yesterday afternoon at the underground nickel mine, part of BHP's nickel west operations near Leinster in Western Australia, was due to a seismic event.

One employee was trapped underground in a safety refuge station, around 100m from the fall.

Emergency crews at the mine worked overnight to clear the rock fall and the worker was bought to the surface at around 6:30am today.

"We are pleased that our safety systems worked as planned and that no one was injured in the incident," BHP said in a statement.

Operations at the underground mine have been suspended and BHP is investigating the incident.
