Mine operator AngloGold Ashanti said the Macmahon Holdings employee was found last night while off shift.

"Counselling services have been made available to all who have been affected by the incident," AngloGold said.

"The relevant authorities have been notified and the man's next of kin are being contacted.

"No further information is available at this time."

MiningNews.net was awaiting a statement from Macmahon at the time of publication.

Tropicana, a 70:30 joint venture between AngloGold and Independence Group, is one of Australia's largest gold mines after starting production late last year.

The mine is located 330km northeast of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia.

Macmahon is the open pit contractor for the operation.
