BHP shareholders back Billiton merger

BHP shareholders have formally approved the company's $57 billion merger with London-listed Billiton to create the world's largest diversified mining conglomerate.

When the dust had settled and the votes been counted following an often acrimonious extraordinary meeting in Melbourne, 88.24% of shareholders had indicated their support for the plan.
