New sea floor hot springs expected to aid mineral discovery

A CSIRO-led team of international scientists has discovered new hot springs on the sea floor almost 2km below the surface of the ocean south-east of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu.

The hot springs host abundant life forms living on recently erupted black volcanic lava flows and yellow-brown deposits rich in iron and possibly other metals, such as copper, zinc, gold and silver.
