Rio defends blast at sacred site

RIO Tinto has defended the blasting of two 46,000-year-old rock shelters at the Brockman 4 iron ore mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara, claiming the site works were above board and approved back in 2013 under relevant Aboriginal heritage legislation.

The Brockman 4 deposit, about 60km northwest of Tom Price, envelopes the Juukan Gorge, a culturally significant site for the local Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura peoples.
