Door opens for Xstrata's McArthur River redevelopment

THE Northern Territory’s Minister for Mines has left the door open for Swiss giant Xstrata to go ahead with the opencut redevelopment of its McArthur River lead-zinc mine, asking the company to address a number of concerns before resubmitting the environmental impact statement (EIS).

Minister Kon Vatskalis has asked the company to address nine concerns, with the central issue being the rechannelling of the McArthur River for more than 5km.
