Former Minerals Council of Australia chair Dr Vanessa Guthrie was named an officer in the general division of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the minerals and resources sector, and as a role model for women in business.

Guthrie currently sits on a number of boards outside the mining sector, including Santos.

Fortescue Metals Group deputy CEO and Fortescue Future Industries CEO Julie Shuttleworth was named a member in the general division of the Order of Australia for significant service to the minerals and mining sector.

The 2012 Telstra Business Woman of the Year started her career in 1998 as a metallurgist with Sino Gold Mining.

"It's an incredible honour to be a recipient of the Member of the Order of Australia. When I started out as a metallurgist, I never imagined I would end up where I am today with such a fulfilling career in the mining and resources industry," Shuttleworth said.

"I am humbled by the positive recognition received from work colleagues across the industry."

Shuttleworth has been at FMG since 2013, first as mine manager at Cloudbreak before being appointed as deputy CEO in 2018 and FFI CEO earlier this year.

"Julie has made an outstanding contribution to Fortescue and the minerals and mining sector more broadly," FMG CEO Elizabeth Gaines said.

"I congratulate Julie on being one of this year's recipients and look forward to continuing to work together on Fortescue's pathway to decarbonisation."

Also receiving an AM was South Australia's Keith Yates for significant service to the minerals and mining sector, and to the community.

Yates, a geologist, worked for Anaconda during the nickel boom and still chairs the Minerals and Energy Advisory Council.

The 2014 winner of the Queensland Resources Council's Indigenous Champion Award, Colin Saltmere, was also made a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to the indigenous communities of North West Queensland.

Saltmere is the managing director of the Myuma Group and is a current member of the steering committee of the North West Queensland Indigenous Resources Industry Initiative.

Several more mining identities were awarded Medals of the Order of Australia in the general division.

EMR Capital co-founder and executive chairman Owen Hegarty received an OAM for service to the minerals and mining sector.

Hegarty is also non-executive chair of upcoming ASX IPO 29Metals, which will be the largest global mining float in many years.

Former Diggers & Dealers owner Kate Stokes received an OAM for service to the minerals and mining sector, and to the community.

Carrying on the legacy of her late husband Geoff, Stokes owned Diggers & Dealers from 1992 until 2017, when she sold it to Myles Ertzen and Sharon Giorgetta.

Orocobre director Leanne Heywood received an OAM for service to business.

The former Rio Tinto marketing executive sits on a number of other boards outside mining.

Malachite Resources exploration manager Russell Meares received an OAM for service to mineral exploration.

He has worked for a number of companies in Australia and South East Asia since the early 1970s.
