Damningly for the current and recent generation of political cadres, Howard is the last Australian PM to serve a full term of office. He is also the nation's second longest-serving leader.

The organisers of the mining forum suggested the former PM's "overview of the state of Australia's political landscape since his retirement will be a topic of interest as will his view on the outlook for Australia's placement in the world with the shifting dynamic between the super powers of America, China and Russia".

He has previously visited Kalgoorlie in 2001, 2004 and 2007.

Diggers & Dealers will take place in early August.
