Ship laden with WA iron ore sinks near Japan

ONE person is dead, nine others are missing and 190,000 tonnes of iron ore are currently sitting on the ocean floor somewhere off the coast of Japan after a Panamian-registered vessel, which departed from Port Walcott near Karratha in Western Australia, sank in heavy seas last Friday.

A Rio Tinto spokeswoman confirmed the sinking to MiningNews.net this morning and said the shipment was sold free-on-board and therefore was fully insured by the customer.
