Caterpillar wields axe on Tassie mining department

MINING equipment manufacturer Caterpillar has confirmed rumours that its Australian workforce will be slashed, announcing 280 jobs will go from its 700-strong Tasmanian workforce by the end of the month.

Caterpillar's Tasmanian base at Burnie, in the state's northwest, is home to the production of the company’s underground mining machines used around the world.
