RON Sayers was last night named as the recipient of the prestigious GJ Stokes Memorial Award at the conclusion of Diggers & Dealers 2018.

Ron Sayers accepts the 2018 GJ Stokes Memorial Award

Sayers retired this year as the managing director of leading Australian mining services player Ausdrill, the company he founded in Kalgoorlie in 1987.

Former Diggers owner Kate Stokes was invited to present the award that bears her late husband's name.

She spoke of Sayers' ability to create a strong and unique culture at Ausdrill, which he said was his proudest achievement, as well as his commitment to the community.

"Thank God I was born in Kalgoorlie," Sayers said, before describing how he got an apprenticeship at the town's Great Boulder mine when he was just 14.

"You have no idea what this award means to me."
