WESTGOLD Resources boss Peter Cook has called on the gold sector to push back against attacks from the government.

Cook walked on to the Diggers & Dealers stage this afternoon to Chumbawamba's Tupthumping, explaining that the lyrics "I get knocked down, but I get up again" epitomised the gold sector.

Like previous years, there were elements of fun to Cook's presentation with lookalikes, playful digs at Bill Beament and the North Melbourne theme song, but he had a more serious message to the sector.

Last year, the Western Australian gold sector successfully pushed back against a planned increase in the gold royalty rate, but WA Treasurer Ben Wyatt continues to indicate the industry should pay more.

"I'm absolutely stunned as to why the government wants to kick this industry in the guts," Cook said.
