CHILEAN chemicals company Sociedad Quimaca y Minera de Chile (SQM) is forecasting a 17% demand increase for lithium in 2019, however, new supplies coming on stream will probably erode the price a further 20% by the second half of the year.

SQM is expanding its lithium hydroxide capacity in Chile to 29,500t/y by 2021

But management stressed more lithium supply for carbonate and lithium hydroxide was needed and that demand for those products would continue to grow at "double-digit rates in the future".
