LITHIUM was the hot metal of 2016 (and likely beyond), and fellow battery metal cobalt is also having its day in the sun.

Cobalt closed at a five-year high of $US37,000 per tonne last week, up by nearly 71% year-on-year.

Like lithium, cobalt is also used in batteries - though not all batteries.
