Losses came across all segments of the sector, with the gold patch the hardest hit with a near 1.5% loss.

On a simplistic basis that corresponded with bullion remaining little moved from 24 hours ago, while in Asian trade, base metal futures were all generally looking a little better.

Better bigger mining stocks included the diametrically opposed-looking duo Orocobre (lithium) and Whitehaven (coal).

Among the jaunty and jaundiced in junior land, there was a bit of love during the session for vanadium types including, for example, Pursuit Minerals (PUR) and Technology Metals (TMT).

Microcap Pursuit had put on nearly 38% as the session moved towards closure after it talked-up the prospects of an early stage project in northern Finland.
