AngloGold's first quarter profit up, sets growth plans

THE world's largest gold miner, AngloGold, has reported higher earnings despite a fall in gold production for the three months ended March 31 and announced a major expansion in the United States.

The Johannesburg-based miner said headline earnings rose 2% to US52c a share, while operating profit remained steady at US$114 million.

Gold output fell 6%, or 113,000 ounces, to 1.
