BHP shareholders meet to decide company's fate

UNIONISTS have gathered outside the Melbourne Concert Hall where BHP shareholders are meeting this morning to vote on the proposed merger with London-listed Billiton that would form the world's largest diversified mining conglomerate.

Shareholders arriving for the meeting were urged by banner-bearing union members to vote against the deal, which they say will cost thousands of jobs and hand control of the company to Billiton.
