The Blackwater coking coal mine in Queensland's Central Highlands is one of the largest coal reserves in Australia with reserves of about 877 million tonnes and an annual production capacity of 13 million tonnes.

The region is a major coal mining area and the town of Blackwater is surrounded by six major open cut mines and one underground operation. More than 100,000 workers have passed through the coal mines over Blackwater's 50 years of mining history.

As part of the work order Downer will carry out overburden removal and haulage, equipment maintenance and drilling services.

Downer's contract consolidates two existing contracts, and the work order will not have any material impact for Downer, on the existing operations at Blackwater.
