But the year ahead presents the very different challenge of having to navigate Newcrest through the organic growth phase it needs to get cracking on in the absence of a big bang acquisition.

As much kudos as Biswas has received for his fix-up and clean-up work, it will be the successful capturing of Newcrest’s organic growth options which will determine his ultimate success in the job, a highly paid one as it is.

Newcrest needs to get moving on organic growth because by around 2020, its production could well be on the skids.
