FITCH Ratings’ suggestion that the prognosis for mining this year would be determined by Chinese policy and the continued development of the electric vehicle (EV) story is hardly a ground-breaking forecast. That the net outcome of these drivers was likely to deliver another strong year for miners, however, is of greater significance.

Fitch – one of the world's premier ratings firms that wield power over global governments and corporations by handing down closely-followed findings on credit-worthiness – has itself been in a prolonged period of reputation reparation. This follows the ratings sector's spectacular failing to clock the global financial crisis a decade ago and accusations it actually encouraged the leverage that almost brought down the financial system.

Since then, ratings agencies have been quick to downgrade and more hesitant to upgrade. They have shown a caution that was conspicuously lacking in the decade leading into the economic meltdown.
