Liv Carroll, a highly regarded geologist who now works out of Accenture’s London office as the group’s senior digital mining principal, told a PDAC 2018 gathering in Toronto she didn’t think the traditional geologist’s role in mineral discovery and mine planning would be made defunct by smart machines.

“There always needs to be a validation step,” she said.

“It’s crucial that we have that validation step with the geoscientists, geologists, geophysicists and geotechnical engineers, in order to, one, make sure the machine learning, the algorithms, are going down the right path, but two, so that there is that engagement [in the machine learning process].
