TWO players involved in the fast-moving world of cryptocurrencies stepped up on a debate platform at PDAC this week to argue bitcoin’s merits versus gold on the precious metal’s home turf.

It was billed as a showdown between one of society's oldest stores of value and means of exchange and one of its very youngest, but by the time the dust had settled one of gold's backers appeared to switch allegiances and a bitcoin supporter acknowledged it might never grow out of its heightened volatility or prove to have been worth the energy used to create it.

In gold's corner were Jeff Christian, New York-based founder of commodities research and consulting company CPM Group, and Rick Rule, president and CEO of Sprott US Holdings and a long-time natural resources investor.
