NEWCREST Mining’s recent C$19 million investment into junior company Almadex Minerals is a prime example of the “desperation” of the majors to bridge the gold production-discovery “gap” that’s currently sitting at around the 40 million ounce per annum mark.

Well regarded ‘independent’ analyst Brent Cook believes there will be plenty more deals involving juniors like this on the way given current global annual gold output of around 90 million ounces hasn’t been matched by the discovery of similar quantum of ounces in a single year since 2006.

The reasons for the shortfall are well acknowledged, with shallow mineralisation having mainly been already found and exploration targeting of good grading ounces at depth being a much more difficult proposition.
