An issue with the Balama operation’s graphite circuit’s fines dryer has led to damage to the refractory bricks and the flame tube, the company said this morning.
While the company can continue to use the separate coarse flake graphite circuit, and can reroute fines to the flake dryer so that production can continue, it means the company may only produce 65% of the planned volume until the issue is rectified.
Using the flake dryer at a higher than planned throughput during the ramp-up phase may help mitigate or eliminate some of the impact.
Syrah is working with the vendor of the drying circuit to find the cause of the issue and make repairs to mitigate production impacts, something it expects could take two months.
