Tonkin told the RIU Explorers Conference in Fremantle that between 30 and 60 floats could be on the way after 25 companies listed in 2017 – up from a mere seven the year before.
Floats increased strongly after 24 IPOs in 2002 and 21 IPOs in 2009, with a staggering 117 hitting the market back in the halcyon days of 2007.
In terms of commodity pricing, Tonkin and Patersons continue to like lithium, but caution the ramping-up of the spodumene producers in Western Australia could have a dampening-effect in the shorter term.
Tonkin also suggested investors who are keen on the cobalt sector need to keep in mind that metallurgical recovery can be an issue.
